Why?
Mary McLeod Bethune believed wholeheartedly that education was the key the racial growth and advancement. She was a teacher and founded her own college, as well as being a personal advisor to both presidents Coolidge and Roosevelt. She also founded the National Council of Negro Women and was the president of the National Association of Colored Women.

Common core is a big change to our school system that will not only affect students directly, but also change the way Americans view education and American standards. It is important to be knowledgeable on such an important topic. From the article above, I can summarize the following pros and cons of common core: 
Pros- Common core should increase learning standards and put students on a more comparable level.
Cons- Common core may not work the way it is supposed to and will greatly increase rigor in the classroom.
